CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. – Jefferson County Schools (JCS) gathered with community and volunteer business partners Monday to celebrate the Work Exploration Program which provides seniors in high school the opportunity to gain experience and to obtain job skills to assist with their successful transition from school to work. Students participating in the program volunteer one hour each week at supporting local businesses in the community.
The Lally House Transitional Work Program, a post-secondary program, also offers students ages 18-21 the opportunity to acquire work skills with additional time on the job to develop skills.
Numerous businesses in the area are participating in this project including the Jefferson Crossing Hair Cuttery in Charles Town. Stylist Nikki Wolfe said it benefits not only the students, but their staff as well.
“It’s such a great opportunity to have the students in there to see what it’s really like to be in the industry,” Wolfe said. “It gets them learning and seeing what we do on a daily basis.”
Students and businesses were recognized for their participation. Businesses who partner with JCS include Advanced Auto, Burger King (Charles Town), City of Charles Town, CVS (Washington Street), Hair Cuttery (Jefferson Crossing), Jefferson County Animal Welfare Society, Jefferson County Parks and Recreation, Jefferson High School, Linda’ Ceramics, McKinney’s Auto, ReMax lst Realty, and The Shenandoah Center.  These businesses have students assigned to them.  Many other businesses support the program but do not have students assigned at the present time.
The Lally House Transitional Work Program is sponsored by Goodwill Industries and Meals-on-Wheels, along with Jefferson County Schools own Wright Denny Elementary School and Blue Ridge Campus.
The school system is proud to recognize the students and business partners who support the youth of the county to build a stronger community.
