LINCOLN, NE. -- The Washington High School Thespian Troupe represented Jefferson County Schools at the International Thespian Festival (ITF) in Lincoln, NE.
Twenty-one WHS students spent the week among 4,000 thespians attending the Festival where they met and worked with the highest-level thespian teachers from around the world.
"The festival was an amazing and fun experience,” said incoming WHS Theatre President, Jada King. “I’ve never been more thankful for such an educational opportunity and for the people who helped us get there."
The Washington High School Theater Troupe was one of just 25 troupes selected to showcase their one act play, The Shape of the Grave, after receiving the highest honors at the WV state level.
Theatre Director, Darrell Cummings said they could not have made the trip without support from the community.
“We literally received hundreds of donations, large and small, to help us raise the money to send the students to the Festival.  We wouldn't have been able to provide this potentially once in a lifetime opportunity without that level of enthusiastic support.”
The WHS Theatre Troupe had just 6 weeks to raise $36,000 to cover travel and festival fees. The Troupe received generous grants from the Jefferson Arts Council, the Nora Roberts Foundation and the Eastern WV Community Foundation and from several local businesses, including Berkel and Company Contractors, The Skinner Law Firm, Sheetz, and Jefferson County Prosperity.  The Old Opera House also donated their theatre space for a local fundraising showcase of the play.

About the Play:
The Shape of the Grave by Laura Lundgren Smith, is about the bloody conflict in Northern Ireland during the 70s. The Washington High actors won high praise from the judges, particularly noted was their mastering the Derry accent of Northern Ireland, the stark staging, and the relevancy of the topic in which polarization and violence create no winners.
