HARPERS FERRY, W.Va. – There will be a familiar face in the Principal’s office when students return to Blue Ridge Campus (BRC) this fall. The Jefferson County Board of Education (JCBOE) approved the hiring of Tara Lusby during their meeting Monday.
Ms. Lusby earned her bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education from Jacksonville State University in Jacksonville, Alabama and her master’s degree in Educational Leadership from Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, TN.
She has taught grades PreK-3rd grade, in a Trauma Informed Care Special Education classroom for K-2nd grade children with behavioral disorders, been an Academic Coach, and most recently as the Assistant Principal at BRC.
Ms. Lusby said she is an avid reader and a life-long learner who knew she wanted to be an educator early on in life.
“Growing up, I was always baby-sitting or looking after younger cousins so education seemed a natural career path, but it wasn’t until I had my very own little classroom of 12 preschoolers at a church daycare that I really fell in love with teaching and nurturing children,” she said.
While Ms. Lusby loved classroom teaching, she said collaborating with other teachers and educators is what brought her the most joy.
“One aspect that I enjoy about administration is that I can combine my love for collaborating with teachers, but still have contact with children and build relationships with them and their families as well.”
Ms. Lusby said she enjoyed getting to know many of the students and families through various meetings, classroom visits, and after school events while serving as Assistant Principal, and called it the true definition of a community school.
She said she is grateful for getting the chance to learn from retiring Principal Susan Zigler, who she called amazing mentor.
“She [Zigler] helped me grow as an educator and leader.  I have greatly appreciated her leadership and guidance this past year.  I hope I can continue to build on the foundation that she has helped establish at Blue Ridge.”
Ms. Lusby is entering her 21st year in public education and her 25th year overall.
