CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. – The Jefferson County Board of Education (JCBOE) has adopted a resolution from West Virginia Governor Jim Justice proclaiming Friday, Sept. 20, 2019, as West Virginia School Service Personnel Day.
The Governor’s Proclamation encourages all citizens to join in this observance.
“Whereas, it is fitting we recognize the outstanding work these individuals do for this state, their communities, and students enrolled in West Virginia Schools.”
The proclamation also highlights how school service personnel impact the school system.
“Whereas, school service personnel ate involved in early every aspect of education by maintaining buildings and grounds, preparing and serving meals, keeping school facilities clean and orderly, and assisting in the classroom, as well as providing administrative support functions, safe transportation, and many other specialized services.”
Mrs. Terri O’Dell, President of the Jefferson County School Service Personnel Association, accepted the proclamation during the JCBOE’s regular meeting on Monday.
“These kids need everyone,” O’Dell said. “It takes all of us.”
O’Dell said many teachers recognize the importance of school service personnel to their work in the classroom.
JCBOE Vice President Mark Osbourn agreed and said service personnel are an integral part of the school system.
“They do a lot behind the scenes that doesn’t get noticed,” he said. ‘We could not be as successful as we are without them.”
Osbourn said the day of recognition is nice because service personnel are not recognized as often as they should be.
Service personnel are being recognized in different ways at each of the schools with special lunches, decorations, and other events to show the gratitude of the school system.
