JCS Prepares for Remote Learning Drill

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. – Jefferson County Schools (JCS) has worked with teachers and families to develop a proactive approach to navigating the uncertainties surrounding the COVID-19 Pandemic. One of the most common areas of concern is the possibility of remote learning brought on by a surge in cases of COVID-19 in Jefferson County. To prepare for that possibility, JCS has scheduled a remote learning drill for Monday, Oct. 12, Columbus Day.
“The 12th will now be a remote learning day for all students,” According to Deputy Superintendent for Instruction Shawn Dilly. “It is a good opportunity for our staff, as well as students and caregivers, to see what it might look like if we had to make that quick pivot in response to a crisis.”
Mr. Dilly added that it is also an opportunity to work out any technical issues that may not arise until remote learning begins.
“This is a first for everyone involved, and we want to make sure that if something is going to act in a way that we can’t anticipate, that we have an opportunity to fix it.”
After conducting the remote instruction drill until noon on the 12th, JCS staff will then break into work groups and debrief on what went well and what can be improved moving forward.
“We will be soliciting feedback from parents on their experience, so we are better prepared moving forward,” Mr. Dilly said.
Teachers and other JCS staff will work from their regular locations while students learn at home. JCS has also worked to support students with limited access to the internet. Ongoing partnerships with local businesses and with the WVDE have created numerous Wi-Fi hotspots around the county. A fleet of five JCS school buses equipped with Wi-Fi are also rotating to different sites, bringing internet access to communities.
Individual schools will release additional information about the remote learning drill on Oct. 12 wand what students and families can expect.
