SHENANDOAH JUNCTION, W.Va. -- The Class of 2020 will have to wait for their graduation ceremony, but high schools in Jefferson County are already celebrating their achievements.
This Friday, May 1, both Jefferson and Washington High Schools will join schools across the state for the West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission's (WVSSAC) new “Shine for WV Seniors” event.
WVSSAC officials are asking schools and citizens to turn on stadium lights, school lights, front porches, anything to show support for the senior class during the COVID-19 Pandemic.
All week the football field at Jefferson High School (JHS) has been lit up to honor seniors for what they've called "Be the Light."
JHS Athletic Director Bill Stewart described it as an awesome and truly inspiring event and said everyone has gotten on board, including JHS staff.
Stweart said JHS Head Softball Coach Desire' Waters found several creative ways to recognize the team's seniors with various displays on the field.
The lights have been turned on at 8:20 each night, or 2020 military time.
Seniors and their families have driven by the stadium, and even taken turns to safely get pictures in their caps and gowns in front of the stadium as part of the celebration.
The WVSSAC is asking that lights be turned on at 8:30 Friday night as part of their event.
