CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. -- Jefferson County Schools will celebrate National School Lunch Week from October 14-18, 2019 to recognize the important work our cafeteria staff does to keep our students fed throughout the year.
The National School Lunch Program, which serves 30 million children each day, has set the theme, “School Lunch: What’s on Your Playlist,” to spotlight how today’s school cafeterias are serving up healthy menu items that kids want to eat, with increased choice and customization.
Jefferson County Schools Child Nutrition Coordinator Jinny Demastes said it takes a lot of work to feed the approximately 7,500 students eating lunch in Jefferson County every day.
Demastes said it is important that the food tastes good and provides the right nutrition.
“School lunches offer students fruits and vegetables, whole grains and milk, and meet federal nutrition standards limiting fat, calories and sodium,” Demastes said. “National School Lunch Week helps us educate parents and students about all the benefits of our lunch program and the appealing variety of choices in the cafeteria.”
The federally-funded National School Lunch Program (NSLP) has been fueling students for success for more than 70 years.
The “School Lunch Playlist” campaign is made possible by the nonprofit School Nutrition Association.
Several Jefferson County Schools will hold special events to celebrate the week.
