Calendar Amended to Assist Students, Staff

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. – The Jefferson County Board of Education (JCBOE) voted to change the school calendar for the 2019-2020 School year.
The vote came after it was discovered that Berkeley and Morgan Counties had deviated from a joint "five-year calendar" due to testing.
So that our families can plan ahead, and people who live and work in different counties can share their vacation with their children, the JCBOE voted to change Spring Break to lineup with the other Eastern Panhandle Counties.
This change also supports the more than 100 Jefferson students who take advantage of the regional James Rumsey Technical Center program.
“It is important that we put our families first and not place an undue burden on the 25% of our staff who live in Berkeley and Morgan Counties and choose to work in Jefferson.” Jefferson County Schools Superintendent Dr. Bondy Shay Gibson said. “We will work with staff and families who have already made plans so they will not be negatively impacted.”
The vote means that Spring break will now occur from April 6, 2020 to April 13, 2020.
“The change now allows us to give the Monday after Easter off to support families traveling and minimize the impact on anyone who has already booked a vacation for that week based on the five-year calendar,” Gibson said.
“I saw the number of teachers we have living in Berkeley County,” JCBOE member Gary Kable said, “if they want to stay home and be with their families during their spring break it would cause a big problem in terms of substitute teachers.”
Kable said this change means that school employees will not have to choose between work and family.
The JCBOE reviewed all alternatives and ultimately made the decision supporting the greatest number of Jefferson families.
