Beitz Begins as JCS Coordinator of Child Nutrition

Dylan BeitzCHARLES TOWN, W.Va. – Dylan Beitz began working as the Coordinator of Child Nutrition for Jefferson County Schools this week. Beitz, a graduate of Jefferson High School, says he is excited to get back to his roots and be closer to family.
“I spent most of my childhood here and have very fond memories,” he said. "I'm looking forward to raising a family in a place that provides so many opportunities.”
Beitz earned his bachelor’s degree in education from West Virginia University before starting his career as a physical education teacher. He became the Child Nutrition Director for Preston County Schools in July of 2014 after considering a different way to serve students.
“I was applying for a technology integration specialist position and was persuaded to apply for the child nutrition position. In reviewing child nutrition policy, I became interested and have been in the position ever since.”
That policy has led Beitz to recognize the importance child nutrition plays for students and their families. He believes it is critical for their overall wellbeing.
“If you subscribe to Maslow's hierarchy of needs, it's the most basic and needs to be fulfilled if we expect children to succeed in the classroom. Students should not have to worry about where or when they will receive their next meal.”
The Jefferson County Board of Education approved the recommendation to hire Beitz in January. His first official day with Jefferson County Schools was March 15.
