CHARLES TOWN, WV -- The Jefferson High School (JHS) Air Force JROTC made a record breaking contribution to the Jefferson County Schools Shoe & Coat Fund Monday when they presented a check for $55,851.67 to the Jefferson County Board of Education.
Major Phil Suydam, Senior Aerospace Science Instructor, said it is a tribute to the generous community and the perseverance of the cadets.
“Never doubt the cadets,” he said. “Never doubt that they are going to do an amazing job.”
Major Suydam and Sergeant Michael Langdon appeared at Monday's board meeting with their hair dyed platinum blonde after betting the cadets they could not raise more than $50,000 in donations.
“We decided to bet the kids if they could reach $50,000, we would dye our hair blonde.,” Suydam said. “This is what it looks like when you lose a $50,000 bet.”
Suydam credited the cadets for their hard work and determination.
Mary Ellen Lloyd, the Facilitator of Student Support Services for JCS, manages the JCS Shoe and Coat Fund.
She said she would be busy!
“We anticipated needing to serve more than 200 students this year,” she told board members.
Lloyd said she has already needed to provide for 70 students this year through the JCS Shoe and Coat Fund.
“Every child should be able to come to school warm, clean, clothed,  and they should look their best to do their best and be their best,” she said.
JCS teachers established the Jefferson County Shoe & Coat Fund to ensure that all students had access to winter-appropriate coats and footwear.
It is supported by Jefferson County Schools and generous contributions from the community.
