SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Teachers, administrators, and service personnel from Jefferson County’s four middle schools participated in a “Farm to School” week over the summer.
Their goals were to connect students to their local environment through food and place based education,  give students opportunities to make healthier eating choices, provide a venue and resources to grow their own food, and forge long-lasting connections to the local community, using farms and growers as a vehicle to do this.
The group visited several local farms, heard guest speakers from various organizations, had a delicious farm to table dinner in  Shepherdstown, came up with action plans to what
“farm to school” may look like at the respective schools, learned about success farm programs in other West Virginia counties, and generally participated in ideas that will bring students and farms closer together.
This week of professional development was designed to facilitate new initiatives for the middle schools to pursue.
