WHS Football FieldCHARLES TOWN, W.Va. – The Jefferson County Board of Education (JCBOE) voted unanimously during a special meeting on April 1, 2019, to allocate $1.46 million to replace the track and football field at Washington High School (WHS) and the track at Jefferson High School (JHS). The JCBOE was able to negotiate several discounts for the taxpayers, totaling more than $59,000 in savings.
The replacement is expected to be completed by the fall of 2019. The Spring Track Season at both high schools will not be affected by the construction.
A recent analysis of the more than decade old field at WHS showed that while it was not unsafe by industry standards, it was showing its age and created a higher than average risk of injury for students. Both tracks have unusable lanes that are beyond repair and need to be completely replaced.
The JCBOE recognizes that there are other athletic facilities that will need to be repaired or replaced in the near future. Those will be prioritized in the 10-year-plan currently under development. Student safety remains the priority. The tracks and football field are centerpieces for the schools and community, hosting not only athletic competitions, but also other events.
