Interim Jefferson County Board Member Applications Due FRIDAY, Oct. 18, 2019

1. Persons interested in applying for the interim appointment to the Jefferson County Board of Education must forward the following documents to Janet Harner by emailing her at

All applications are due no later than close of business on Friday, October 18, 2019.  
The appointment will be made by October 24, 2019.  

a letter expressing interest in the position
a current résumé or curriculum vitae
three letters of reference and contact information for each reference
answers to the four questions listed at the end of this webpage
statement verifying address and the magisterial district in which the applicant resides
The applicant appointed by the Jefferson County Board of Education cannot, when assuming office, reside in a magisterial where two county board members currently reside. Current Jefferson County Board of Education members represent the following magisterial districts: Kabletown district (2 members), Shepherdstown district (1 member), Charles Town district (1 member).  Thus, the appointed county board member, when seated in office as the interim Board member, must reside in the Charles Town, Shepherdstown, Harpers Ferry or Middleway Magisterial Districts.
The Jefferson County Board of Education’s interim appointment does not preclude the appointed member, or any applicant, from seeking election to the position in the county board of education election to be held in conjunction with the May 2020 Primary Election.  Residents of all magisterial districts will be eligible for election in May 2020.
The appointed member is required to receive school board training prescribed by statute.

As part of the application process, each applicant should respond to the four questions listed:

1. What are the three top goals you wish to accomplish as a member of the Jefferson County Board of Education?

2. What is your understanding of the roles and responsibilities of the Jefferson County Board of Education and of the county superintendent?

3. What are the 3 primary challenges facing Jefferson County Schools and how do you think the Jefferson County Board of Education should respond to these issues? Given that you will be one member of a five-member county board. How can you effectively ensure your leadership attributes can influence county board decision-making given that other ideas will be proposed regarding these issues?

4. Why are you the best candidate for this position?

A five-member elected Board of Education oversees the operations of the Jefferson County Schools system. Each Board member is elected to a four-year term in a nonpartisan election.The Jefferson County Board of Education meets in regular session on the second and fourth Monday of each month. Regular meetings begin at 7:00 p.m. and are held at the Board of Education Office at 110 Mordington Avenue, Charles Town, West Virginia, unless otherwise posted.

The Board encourages public attendance. A time for public comment on any school or education issue is available at the beginning of each regular meeting. Those wishing to address the Board are asked to sign a registration sheet available at the entrance to the Boardroom or school meeting room no later than 15 minutes prior to the beginning of a meeting.

 The agenda for upcoming regular meetings is posted online HERE and outside the central office at 110 Mordington Avenue in Charles Town the Wednesday prior to the meeting. Regular Board of Education meetings are recorded and broadcast on Cable Channel 18 and made available on YouTube.
