• Jefferson County Schools to Adjust Schedule in Preparation for Solar Eclipse

Charles Town, W.Va.- Jefferson County Schools will observe a delayed dismissal schedule to address safety concerns during the solar eclipse that will occur at approximately 2:41 p.m. in Jefferson County on August 21. Students will arrive home 20 minutes later than regularly scheduled.

All Jefferson County Schools will adhere to a delayed dismissal schedule of 20 minutes to eliminate safety concerns of students and staff loading buses during the event. “Our students’ safety is our top priority even during this exciting scientific phenomenon. We have evaluated a variety of options, and have concluded that a delayed dismissal to avoid having our students and staff standing outside and loading buses during the peak of the eclipse is the most optimal way to minimize risks to our staff and students,” said Dr. Bondy Shay Gibson, superintendent of Jefferson County Schools.

Although Jefferson County Schools will not require participation or planned activities about the eclipse, a majority of schools have built the event into their curriculum. Participating schools that have chosen to observe the event have gone through the necessary preparations and protocol to provide viewing equipment.
