It has come to our attention that many students are using the social media app, Hall Pass: for teens. This app allows it’s users to make posts anonymously by joining CTMS through a database of schools through a national list. Many of the users are using the app to post rude, derogatory comments about peers, staff members, and other individuals. The administration team has already been in contact with the app’s developers to request that they shut down the Charles Town Middle School site on their app.
We are doing our best to track down students. Anyone caught posting inappropriate comments will be suspended for a disruption of the learning environment, derogatory, and/or disrespectful comments. We do also believe that it is a small population of students who are posting, the administration team has notified the students that if the inappropriate posts do not stop that we will be forced to implement a school wide RED ZONE. CTMS takes pride in the use of technology and does not want to punish the whole school for a handful of students who are unable to be respectful digital citizens.
While we believe in our students’ right to free speech, we also understand that this app is providing a platform for students to bully, tease, and harass others. Please take the time to check your student’s device and make sure that they are not using the app.
Thank you for helping mediate this issue.
