Children learning to cook at Kids Cooking Camp

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. – Jefferson County Schools has partnered with the Jefferson County Parks and Recreation Commission to host the “Fun with Food – Kids Cooking Camp”. The four-day camp is being held twice during the summer at Page Jackson Elementary School, where Cafeteria Manager Flo Best said kids are learning a lot about how to properly prepare a variety of foods.

“We’re teaching them how to safely cut using plastic knives,” Best said as she pointed to cutting boards and several sliced apples. “The kids also really liked making and eating the turkey-wraps.”

Best said the elementary-age campers are enjoying healthy snacks, as well as some sweet indulgences like cupcakes and even donuts. Best said they teach campers about a balanced diet and eating in moderation.

Jefferson County Schools Superintendent Dr. Bondy Shay Gibson proposed hosting the camp at Page Jackson. Best said it has been a lot of fun for her as well as the campers. She said she anticipates working with the Parks and Recreation Commission again next year.
