SOUTH JEFFERSON kicks off the study of flight, the academic topic for the 2009-2010 school year. What better way to start off the year of study than watching and learning about hot air balloons. Mr. Robert Thomas, of Balloons Unlimited, Inc. from Middleburg, Virginia, came to SJES to demonstrate his hot air balloon and answer questions students had about flying balloons.

South Jefferson Elementary School Roadrunners  

South Jefferson Elementary was constructed in 1971. It consolidated the three elementary schools of Summit Point, Middleway, and Rippon. The building has had three additions since 1971 the first occurring in 1975 when the buildings current primary wing was extended. The second addition occurred in 1985 when the current intermediate wing was extended. Around 1990, a multi-purpose room and a computer lab were added in the middle of the structure. The land was obtained through Thomas Kern and was previously part of Pembroke Grove. On the property there is a historical marker stating that South Jefferson's property is part of Washington's Land. The property was originally a part of Charles Washington's land.
