Eighth grader, Nicole Wunder, has been selected as a participant in the Health Sciences and Technology Academy (HSTA) of West Virginia University. HSTA is a 9th-12th grade math and science program which encourages students to pursue careers in health sciences, science and math teaching, speech pathology, and audiology. All participants must keep a 3.0 GPA, attend weekly meetings and activities, complete a yearly science project, present their project at a science symposium, attend summer institutes, and complete at least 75 hours of community service. Johnathan Schattel received Second Place for his project “How Did Switzerland Remain Neutral During WWII?” in the History category. Ian Ward received Honorable Mention for “Who Was Charles Faulkner?” in the State and Local History category. Way to go, Johnathan and Ian! |
Three Wildwood Middle School teachers attended an intensive training to enhance their instruction of English Language Learners (ELLs). Participants received three days of professional development from Lisa Tabaku, who is the Associate Director of the Center for Applied Linguistics. Participants learned fundamentals for teaching students who are learning English, practiced effective teaching strategies, and developed lesson plans that incorporated strategies learned in the workshop. Pennies for Patients Mrs. DeHaven’s 8th grade homeroom won the breakfast by donating a generous $376.34! Mrs. Cotterill’s homeroom was in 2nd place with a total of $286.70. The school was able to raise $1,600.00 total for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society! |
Congratulations to the Jazz Band on a great performance at the Hedgesville Jazz Festival! The band received a rating of excellent. ![]() ESL Teacher Selected for Teachers for Global Classrooms Program(a US State Department Program) Laurie Smelter, ESL teacher at Wildwood Middle School, has been selected for the Teachers for Global Classrooms Program (TGC), a program of the U.S. Department of States Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Over 300 teachers applied to the program from 45 U.S. states and Ms Smelter was one of the 65 teachers who were selected for participation. The goal of the TGC program is to provide teachers the opportunity to explore the themes and applications for global education in secondary school classrooms. As part of TGC, Ms. Smelter will participate in an online professional development course, attend two Global Education Symposia in Washington, DC, and travel on an international fellowship for two weeks to India! While abroad, Ms. Smelter will visit schools, classrooms, and meet with secondary school teachers and educational leaders. The objective of TGC is for teachers to gain new insights and a broader understanding of ways to incorporate international perspectives and global education into their classrooms. |
