  • Senator Manchin and Blue Ridge Elementary
    Celebrate Black History Month
     BRE studentd and Manchin
Gay Henderson, Blue Ridge Elementary Librarian, (all fifth grade  members of
the student council) Hagen McGowan, Zachary Wick, Brenden Kerr, Korben
Kaiser, Anna Raskovskiy, and principal, Susan Zigler.

West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin recently recognized Blue Ridge
Elementary in his visit to historic Storer College in Harpers Ferry on
Friday, February 6th.  As part of a Black History Month celebration,
Senator Manchin delivered remarks to be included in the Congressional
    Record
to recognize the former college’s historical importance.

During the event, Senator Manchin honored Gay Henderson, Blue Ridge
Elementary School Librarian, for her work on a project called,
    “From Africa to Appalachia."

The program, supported by a grant and local funding from the Eastern
West Virginia Community Foundation and the Jefferson Arts Council,
will bring a group of talented musicians from Mali in West Africa to the
stage at Blue Ridge Elementary. International Bluegrass Award winner,
Sammy Shelor will join the group. Together, they will perform for 310
children grades ranging from second to fifth.

Mrs. Henderson said the program will support Blue Ridge Elementary
in its efforts to create an environment where students can see similarities
and respect differences among diverse cultures. Blue Ridge Elementary is
thrilled Mrs. Henderson and the fifth grade student council were able to
represent the school during the Black History Month celebration and
    recognition of Storer College.
