C.W. SHIPLEY SALUTES OUR VOLUNTEERS

C.W. Shipley has been blessed with many volunteers. One of our regular volunteers is Betty Kidwiler. She started teaching in 1955 at Harpers Ferry Graded School, which was closed with the building C.W. Shipley Elementary. She taught all subjects including music, art, P.E., and library for Grades 4-7 for 40 years until retiring in 1995 at the age of 62. Now, Betty continues to help by sorting mail, counting out papers for homeroom teachers, answering the phone, and in any other way that she can. Betty has been a faithful volunteer, only missing due to illness. She is like a grandmother to all, and C.W. Shipley Elementary would not be the same without her. For her many decades of volunteer service, Betty Kidwiler deserves to be recognized as an outstanding senior volunteer.

SNOW DAYS

Snow Days are a good time to practice math facts, read, or play games! Check if your child's teacher has sent a Snow Packet for the event, and take advantage of the Quick Links to educational websites/online educational games on our homepage.

FOCUSING ON KINDNESS

An Iowa teenager is receiving national attention for taking the time to compliment his classmates. It is his stand against cyber bullies. He and two friends have sent over 3,000 notes of praise to classmates at last count.

This is a good reminder that one word or note of praise can help make someone's day and make the world a better place to live.

SAFETY AND SECURITY REMINDER

This is a reminder of safety and security procedures at CW Shipley. Please help us make sure that all children have a safe and secure environment to learn in every day.
·        Everyone entering the building (including parents bringing students inside the school or signing children out at the end of the day) must provide photo identification.
·        Front doors open at 8:30. Please do not bring students to school prior to that time.
·        Doors open for parent pick-up at 3:35. Please do not come early.
·        All visitors must report directly to the front office, provide identification, sign in, and receive a visitor’s badge.
·        Visitors/Parents are not allowed to go to classrooms after the 9:00 a.m. tardy bell rings.
·        If you ask somebody not on your child’s emergency form to pick them up, send a note to school including your contact information and expect to be called by school personnel to verify the authenticity of your note.
·        When entering the building, please do not hold the door open for visitors that have not pressed the call button. Each visitor must press the call button and wait to be admitted after speaking with the receptionist.
·        The AlphaBest Before/After Care Program has a wireless doorbell to ring if you are checking students in or out of that program.
·        All after school programs (sports, scouts, etc.) will have a representative at the front doors to allow entrance.
We would like to assure you that everyone at C.W. Shipley has the safety and welfare of your children as our priority.

There are links to help your child learn math facts, practice reading, learn to type, and make word searches to just have fun. If you have a website you would recommend, please let us know.

Practicing math facts and reading at home are two great ways to help your child excel!

Food Lion sent a nice letter to the school saying that to date, we only have 16 cards signed up. We need 25 cards signed up to receive a monthly check. P.S. Don’t forget to save and send in Boxtops for Education, which can be found on many General Mills products. Each Boxtop is 10¢, that helps fund the Elizabeth Seibert Scholarship, which is given to graduating seniors, who attended Shipley at least 4 years.

C.W. SHIPLEY NAMED EXEMPLARY SCHOOL FOR 2012-2013

C. W. Shipley was one of three schools in Jefferson County, along with Driswood Elementary and Shepherdstown Elementary, named as an Exemplary School for the 2012-2013 school year.   C.W. Shipley was named a WV School of Excellence in 2003-4, and named an Exemplary School for the years 2004-5, 2008-9, 2009-10, 2010-11, and 2011-12. The West Virginia Department of Education Website states that:

"Exemplary distinction is the gold standard of educational achievement. Schools must meet a set of rigorous standards to achieve such status:
          1.    All schools will be ranked by the percent proficient in each subject, including reading/language arts, math, science, social studies as well as the Writing Assessment. Schools earning the top combined ranking will be eligible for the next step of ranking on a student achievement index. All students in each school will be ranked by a student achievement index in each subject on the WESTEST2 and Writing Assessment with progressive weighting for scores at each performance level (.25 for Below Mastery, .5 for Mastery, .75 for Above Mastery, and 1.0 for Distinguished) and aggregated for a total ranking. The top 10 percent weighted ranking for elementary, middle and high schools will be designated as Exemplary if other criteria are met.
2.    The student attendance rate is at or above 94 percent in the most recent year for which data are available.
3.    The percentage of students who successfully complete Advanced Placement, dual credit and honors classes as defined in Policy 2510 is at or above five percent in high schools.

HELPING YOUR CHILD(REN) REACH THEIR DREAMS

I've been asked by several parents how they can help their children at home. Two of the best ways to help children at any age are:

1. Read to your child(ren) and have them read to you.
2. Help your child practice math facts (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division). This can be done with flash cards or computer games. There are links for free computer games on this website. Children need to know their facts automatically to do their best in math.

Thank you for sharing your children with us each day and for supporting us at home. Working together, we can help your child(ren) achieve their dreams.
