   Field Day!

Field Day will be Friday June 7 the last day of School! It will begin shortly after 9am and last until about 11am.
We are having the field day activities in the beginning of the day in order to avoid the heat of the afternoon. Please remember sunscreen and a water bottle!
Please contact Ms. Dudash if you can volunteer. She can be reached at SES by phone (304-876-6270), by e-mail (vdudash@access.k12.wv.us), or you can send a note in with your child. Please let me know what grade your child is in when you contact me.

Field Day Activities ‘12
May 29^th
We will have two separate sets of “stations”. The K-1 stations will be on or near the k-1 playground with an example of activities below. Each class will rotate together to each station.
The 2-4 students will move with a partner to the activity of his/ her choice. (This is how the field day that I visited in ’08 was organized) An air horn will indicate time to switch stations in order to keep one or two stations from being overwhelmed.
We only need 7 stations for the k-1 rotations. Both of the lists below are examples of activities from the past and a few new ideas. Please feel free to come up with your own ideas.

Thank you to everyone who helped to make the Red Bud Festival a great success once again this year! Thank you to our teachers, staff, volunteers, our children and their families, both our local and other businesses, and members of the community who came out to support SES in the various facets of Red Bud! It was a wonderful day and it couldn't have been done without all of you!

Summer Learning Challenge
The West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE) has a challenge for you! The summer learning slide is a reality that many students deal with each year. One summer off can sometimes mean a whole school year of struggling academic performance. In an effort to keep students active and engaged all summer long, we have compiled a series of reading and math activities for students and launched the Summer Reading and Math Challenge. The WVDE has created a webpage, which includes tools and resources you can use to encourage students to read and practice their math skills. The challenge to keep children reading and doing math this summer is part of the West Virginia Department of Education's ongoing efforts to improve student achievement.

Rise and Shine Summer Camp
Shepherdstown Elementary School
Summer, 2013

Shepherdstown Elementary School is sponsoring two, two week summer camp programs taught by Mrs. Webb, Mrs. Cline, Ms. Jonczak, Mrs. Boyd, Ms. Schar and others. The camp will be open to rising first graders through rising sixth graders. We will emphasize cross-curricular learning and written expression with a special emphasis math in the real world.

Please complete the application, check the session you want and return with a $25. deposit to the school by Friday, May 31, 2013. Each two week session will cost $110. and will run from 8:30 – 12 over the 10 weekdays (excluding the week-end). We may be able to schedule a special field trip in the area (pending receipt of a grant), so we may adjust the schedule to accommodate one or two all-day excursions.

Important Notice - Calendar Change
Jefferson County Board of Education met March 1, 2013 at 10 a.m. to approve the following changes to the
2012-2013 school calendar. These changes are required due to school closings for inclement weather earlier this year.

Per WV Code §18-5-45, the following changes have been made to the 2012-2013 School Calendar.
     ·       June 3 - regular Instructional day of school for students
     ·       June 4 - regular Instructional day of school for students
     ·       June 5 - regular Instructional day of school for students
     ·       June 6 - regular Instructional day of school for students
     ·       June 7 - regular Instructional day of school for students

Our "Cash for Trash" Program pays off!

Thank you to all of our parents and kids who clip, save, and send in UPC's for our Cash for Trash Program here at SES! We wanted you to see that it really pays off!
The items shown below all came from Coke Rewards and Labels for Education.

Each classroom now has its own soccer ball and a playground ball for recess. Grades 1-5 each have their own basketballs.

Our Art Classroom has received the items listed below for our children to use to better complete projects!
2 boxes (150 packs) of Model Magic to be used by K & 1st Grade for a special project.
2 boxes (144 pens) glitter glue pens
2 boxes (60 sticks) glue sticks
36 pairs of scissors

Please continue to take the time to save for our Cash for Trash Program. And don't forget about BoxTops and Tysons (both of whom send us checks for our efforts.) Click here to get more information, so you know what to save and send in!

Note that all of the items we received were FREE thanks to our wonderful parents as well as to our parent volunteers who faithfully collect, count and mail our "trash" for rewards.

Parents and persons planning to visit any of our schools are reminded of the following procedures:
Please ring the buzzer and face the camera. Please state who you are and the reason you want to enter. If more than one (1) person desires entry, each person will look into the camera and state who they are and their reason for entering. The office staff will verify the reason for entry in the building and electronically unlock the door. All persons entering the building must immediately report to the main office.
Only office staff will unlock the doors. Students and staff have been instructed not to open doors for any visitors, if they are in the vicinity of the entrance.
Anyone coming to pick up a student must have identification to show the attendance clerk. If you are picking up a student and you are not on the emergency list, you must have permission in writing from the parent/guardian to pick them up, with a working phone number so the parent/guardian can be contacted to verify the pickup.

Thank you for understanding why we have these procedures, and working patiently with our office staff.

1.      Please press buzzer to enter.
2.      State name and purpose of visit.
3.      After buzzed in, turn right to go to the office on your left.
4.      Sign in as a visitor.
5.      Have your identification available to show to staff.
6.      Your name must be on child’s emergency form to sign achild out from school or have a note from parent with phone contact.
