 Dear Parents,

           Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have been affected by the tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut. The safety of your child is a priority at T. A. Lowery. I wanted to outline the measures that T. A. Lowery has in place to maintain a safe and secure environment for your child. We will not initiate a classroom discussion of the events that are broadcast in the news. If the subject is brought up, our staff will make clear to your child how we are safe at school, and if necessary, contact Mrs. DeRonda, our guidance counselor.     

• We practice emergency drills with our students and staff throughout the school year.
• All regular staff and substitutes wear identification badges.  
• Our exterior doors remain locked and visitors are buzzed in through the front door to the main office to sign in.  
• You are required to have photo identification to pick up your child, and children are only released to those individuals listed on their emergency form.
• If you are volunteering in our building, you will be required to present your photo identification so that we can print an identification badge
• The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department conducts walkthroughs of our building on a regular basis, and I work closely with them to maintain a safe school environment.   
• The coordinator of Maintenance and Facilities and I checked all windows and exterior doors, in addition to checking all staff and visitors for identification badges this morning.
• Mrs. DeRonda, our Guidance Counselor, is available for students as needed.  
• Any suspicious activity can be reported to local law enforcement or anonymously to the WV Safe Schools Helpline at 1-866-SAFEWVA (1-866-723-3982)
• We will maintain our regular school routines, as structure and predictability are important for our students. 

           The reunification plan is used in the event that we would need to evacuate the building and move to another location, which is Jefferson High School.   If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me by phone, email, or in person and I will be happy to speak with you.
